Get Involved with the Rehabilitation of the Kakapo Population
There are many websites that you are able to contact for information on donating time, money, or items to. Below I have listed a couple sites that have pages on how you can donate and help support the conservation efforts. No donation is ever too small. Without the aid of people, the Kakapo species will go extinct. As most of you won`t be scientists in New Zealand researching or working directly with these lovely birds, its a meaningful gesture to donate and or help raise awareness.

Birdorable, a website that you can buy t-shirts from and a percent of what you pay goes to the Kakapo Recovery Programme: http://www.birdorable.com/save-the-kakapo/
Another link to the Kakapo Recovery Programme, this page informs you on volunteer opportunities. You could signup to work directly with these rare and peculiar birds! http://www.kakaporecovery.org.nz/volunteers/
There are numerous other websites that accept donations for the kakapos or endangered species/conservation in general. Most websites that accept donations specifically for the kakapo will then give that money to the Kakapo Recovery Programme.
Talk about the Kakapo on social Media, its always interesting to see what different people have to say and offer. One of the best pages/profiles to check out is Sirocco the kakapo`s. For more information on him look to the What Are Kakapo? page. Posted below also are direct links to Sirocco`s facebook and Twitter accounts.

The Responisibility of a Pet Parrot
People have enjoyed the company of pets for centuries. Cats, dogs and birds are among the most common throughout history and present time of domesticated pets. Parrots are one of the most popular birds to choose for a pet because of their prominent personalities and often their ability to sing or talk.
Many parrots have the lifetime of close to 100 years, that`s longer than many people! The Macaw parrots, shown above in the photos, is one parrot type that falls into this catagory. They are most likely the ones you think of when you hear "parrot". Sadly many of these birds are given up as owners are not able to take care of them for such a lengthy period of time. One of these places that allows you to visit these fantastic birds who no longer have a home is Parrot Island a sanctuary in Peachland, Thompson Okanagan. I had the opportunity to go and visit the rescued birds while attending an SPCA camp one summer, group and school tours can be arranged by contacting them. It was an interesting trip for me as a young teenager to see what a large responsibility it is to take on such an animal as a pet, Parrots are not a pet to buy someone for a Christmas present and be returned a month later. Each bird has its own personality and just like a person, it is effected by its past experiences, it had been obvious to us which birds unfortunately hadn`t been treated and looked after properly.
This is not by any means a general rule for what happens to all Macaw and other parrots when owned as pets. But it can be the result of poor planning for the long term keeping of a pet or even just if a life event happens that an owner is no longer fit or able to take care of their parrot. So it is best to keep in mind the health of your potential pet and you, when making such decisions.
Organizations such as the Parrot Island Sanctuary do take donations and "useful items". If you would like to make a donation the link is below.
